SUBSTRATE LEVEL
Climate-Resilient Red Strawberry Grow Kit Manual
- For Beginner Growers
Step 1: Transplanting
-
Remove Seedlings Carefully
Gently lift the seedlings from their original container, taking care not to disturb the roots.
-
Prepare the New Pot
Select a new pot with a diameter of 15–20 cm and a height of 12–15 cm. Fill approximately one-third of the pot with substrate. Create a hole in the centre of the substrate to accommodate the seedling.
-
Place the Seedling
Position the seedling in the prepared hole, ensuring that all roots are fully covered by the substrate.
-
Add Substrate
Continue adding substrate until it reaches the base of the crown. Ensure the crown remains exposed and is not covered by the substrate.
-
Stabilise the Plant
Gently but firmly press the substrate around the seedling to secure it in place and provide stability.
-
Water Thoroughly
Immediately after transplanting, water the pot thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom. Within the first 7 days, repeat watering 1–2 times especially if the substrate surface appears dry. Do not apply any nutrient solution during this period.
Step 2: Plant Care
-
Optimal Growing Environment
-
Avoid exposing the plant to direct sunlight between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, as the intensity of midday sun can cause leaf burns and heat stress.
-
Ensure the plant receives 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
-
If grown in an air-conditioned space, lightly mist the leaves to increase humidity. Avoid wetting flowers as it will affect the pollination success.
-
Empty the tray immediately if excess water accumulates, to prevent root rot.
2. Watering Frequency
-
If you do not have the Singrow A & B fertiliser, begin with 80 ml (up to 150 ml) of water daily before 9:00 AM—this is suitable for air-conditioned indoor environments, where temperature and humidity are more stable.
-
For outdoor environments or areas with higher temperatures, plants will lose moisture more quickly and may require additional water to maintain healthy growth.
-
To determine whether more water is needed, check the moisture level of the substrate:
-
With dry hands, check the top inch of soil by touch. It should feel slightly damp—neither dry and crumbly nor wet and sticky.
-
Alternatively, take a handful of substrate and gently squeeze it. Ideally, 3-4 drops of water should be released, indicating optimal moisture.
-
-
Adjust your watering volume based on these checks. If the substrate dries out quickly or feels dusty, gradually increase the water amount until the soil remains evenly moist throughout the day.
3. Nutrient Fertiliser
If you are using the Singrow A & B fertiliser, follow these guidelines to prepare your nutrient solutions:
-
Provide nutrients from the 7th day onwards after transplanting.
-
For Nutrient A, add 0.4 g fertiliser into 1 L water, stir until fully dissolved. Apply 80 ml (up to 150 ml) on even days (i.e. Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun).
-
For Nutrient B, add 0.2 g fertiliser into 1 L water, stir until fully dissolved. Apply 80 ml (up to 150 ml) on odd days (i.e. Tue, Thurs, Sat).
4. Pruning
Once new leaves have appeared, remove older leaves using sharp scissors.
Pruning guidelines by growth phase:
-
Vegetative (Leafy) Phase:
-
Remove fully yellow/brown leaves.
-
Pinch off all flowers before the plant reaches the 6-leaf stage (the plant isn’t ready to support fruit yet).
-
-
Flowering Phase:
-
Keep at least 4–5 healthy leaves.
-
-
Fruiting Phase:
-
Keep at least 6–7 healthy leaves.
-
For optimal fruit development, number of fruits should not exceed the total number of healthy leaves.
-
5. Pollination
-
Select two days between the 2nd and 5th day after flowers have fully opened for pollination.
-
Avoid pollinating too early in the morning or too late in the afternoon, ideally between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
-
During pollination, ensure the temperature remains to maintain below 30°C pollen viability.
-
Gently use a soft brush to transfer pollen from the anthers to the central stigma with an inward sweeping motion.
-
Reduce misting frequency during this period to keep humidity levels low.
-
Avoid wetting flowers as it will affect the pollination success.

Step 3: Pest Management
Strawberry plants are commonly affected by spider mites, aphids, and powdery mildew. Regular preventative care is key to keeping these pests under control.
-
Spider mites are tiny, spider-like pests that feed on plant sap, often leaving behind yellow speckling or fine webbing on leaves. They thrive in hot, dry environments.
-
Mist both sides of the leaves twice a day. This helps increase humidity and discourages mite infestations.
-
Avoid wetting flowers as it will affect the pollination success.
-
-
Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that cluster on new growth and undersides of leaves, feeding on sap and excreting a sticky substance called honeydew, which can attract ants and mold.
-
Rub them off gently with your fingers to dislodge the insects.
-
For persistent infestations, apply new growth on both sides of the leaves, following the product’s instructions.
-
-
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that appears as white, powdery spots.
-
Gently shower the plant with water to wash off fungal spores. Tilt the pot 45° to avoid drenching the substrate.
-
Avoid wetting flowers as it will affect the pollination success.
-
Ensure good ventilation around the plant to help the foliage dry quickly, reducing the chance of mildew returning.
-
Step 4: For Advanced Growers
For experienced growers, follow the above instructions with the following modifications:
-
Initial Watering and Nutrient Application (Days 1–7)
-
Immediately after transplanting, thoroughly water the entire substrate with plenty of water until it drains from the bottom of the pot.
-
From Day 4 to Day 7:
-
Dissolve 0.2 g of Nutrient A in 1 L of water.
-
Apply 80 ml of this solution to the plant daily.
-
2. Ongoing Care (From Day 7 Onwards)
-
Begin using both Nutrient A and Nutrient B solutions.
-
Instead of applying 80–100 ml at once, split watering into two sessions:
-
Morning (before 9:00 AM): Apply 40–50 ml of Nutrient B solution (0.2 g fertiliser per 1 L water).
-
Afternoon (before 2:00 PM): Apply 40–50 ml of Nutrient A solution (0.4 g fertiliser per 1 L water).
-
-
If the pot dries out quickly or the substrate remains too dry, increase the total water volume, but do not exceed 150 ml per day.
